Career Goals and Professional Qualifications

I have long been interested in working at the intersection of biomedical health research, government health policy, and public education and awareness.  While my formal training and education is in biomedical research, I am looking to transition away from the laboratory environment and build a career where I can leverage my background to influence public health and/or science policy while gaining important public health experience and training. I am also highly interested in public health and science communications.

I have spent the majority of the past ten years working as graduate student and scientific researcher in a biomedical laboratory at Emory University studying Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. The primary focus of my personal research was the characterization and evaluation of a novel brain protein for use as a potential diagnostic entity in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. This project required extensive data gathering, detailed statistical analyses of large databases, and a broad understanding of the current state of neurodegenerative disease healthcare in order to assess the translational value of my findings. I am very comfortable reading and evaluating the primary literature, writing grant applications and progress reports, and presenting my findings in both written publications and oral presentations. I have been published in peer reviewed journals and value open communication of scientific findings. Moreover, working in the lab environment has taught me to work independently while still functioning as part of a larger team. I completed the requirements for my doctoral degree in Neuroscience at Emory University in December 2011 and graduated in May 2012.

During my time as a graduate student, I have become increasingly aware that biomedical scientific advancements are meaningless until they are adapted and applied for the promotion of public health. As such, I am very interested in transitioning into a position outside of the lab where I can be directly involved in promoting public health policy, education, and awareness. I am passionate about discussing public health issues, particularly those associated with cancer and other non-communicable diseases. As part of my volunteer work, I have used a variety of platforms including both web publishing and social media to generate support for non-profit health organizations and initiatives. I am uniquely talented at distilling complex scientific ideas for lay audiences and have found this skill to be especially useful for gaining the interest of others in biomedical research issues and policy. While my background is in neuroscience, I learn quickly and am comfortable when presented with ideas and materials from outside my field.

Now that my graduate school career has come to an end, I am eager to begin building my career in public health and science policy and am open to positions in the government, not-for-profit, and commercial sectors.
